Cosas con las que me encuentro

Dear Atheists

lemonmeringue13:

I am SO sick of Christians being portrayed as stupid and Atheists being portrayed as the only reasonable logical people on the face of the earth.  Many of my friends, and most of my oldest dearest friends are atheists.  I’ve been on a knife’s edge with my faith, but arrogant atheists always keep me resolute.

First of all, a true scientist is agnostic.  They are skeptical, but only disbelieve that which is disproved.  Science does not PROVE ANYTHING, that is NOT what science is about.  Science is a humble and methodical examination of the material world around us.  It cannot prove or disprove the human soul, it cannot prove or disprove God, it cannot prove or disprove historic Christianity.  All it can do is take a humble look at the world, and as dispassionately as possible attempt to draw conclusions.  Perhaps the most brilliant mind of an age, Albert Einstein, did not approve of atheism and preferred a “humble agnosticism.”  He referenced God on multiple occasions.

Most atheists don’t know anything about religion.  It is all myth and ignorance to them.  The idea of faith through reason is not something they can fathom, because they have not read anything other than science textbooks, certainty no Thomas Aquinas.  Very few of my atheist friends, I’d wager, have ever read the entire bible or even Darwin’s entire Origin of Species.  All they need to know about Christianity is Galileo’s history.  A few of them know about Mendel’s genetics.  Almost none of them know that the Big Bang theory is traced back to a Catholic priest. No, these scientific discoveries are dismissed, covered up, or reduced to “oh, well he must not have been Christian, he was only a Priest to get a cheap education…”  Please.

True  atheism has no central tenants such as the Christian faith, other than the belief there is no God, and have no delusion, that is a belief.  Science can’t comment on God though.  So no, there is no scientific basis for atheistic belief, no more than there is for Christian, Buddhist, or Muslim belief.

So stop your hate campaign.  Stop belittling people for having faith that there is something more, because you have faith too.  You have faith that there is nothing more.  I’m willing to bet people will ultimately choose faith, reasoned faith, but faith nonetheless.  A belief in something higher is better than a belief in nothing.  The diversity of Christian belief is vast, and there are reasonable Christians, then there are less reasonable.

Keep in mind the belief in people’s equality found in our founding documents was born from Christian belief, science couldn’t prove it until much later.  It was a belief.  For example, it was the extreme religious element of society that proved most crucial in the Underground Railroad.  So maybe there’s something to this Christianity.  Maybe not.  However hating us and trying to make us look stupid won’t work.  The Westboro Baptists are not the heart of Christianity, Christ is, and he has a very different message.

I don’t usually comment on these post but I just want to make some quick replies.

First the Good:

I am SO sick of Christians being portrayed as stupid and Atheists being portrayed as the only reasonable logical people on the face of the earth.

So far I agree, I know many intelligent people that are also very religious and many atheists that are not really very bright (to say the least)

The Westboro Baptists are not the heart of Christianity, Christ is, and he has a very different message.

OK,  this is also true, Westboro Baptists are not (in my opinion) what all religious people behave like.

Sorry, Couldn’t find much more to agree with.

Now the Bad

First of all, a true scientist is agnostic.  They are skeptical, but only disbelieve that which is disproved.

The true scientist apply the scientific method, there’s nothing much else to it so I don’t follow this claim. They should be skeptical, that’s true but “ only disbelieve that which is disproved” it’s so wrong… really wrong.

If something is proven then you have rational reasons to believe in it, not the other way around. No one has disproved that a cyborg unicorn lives in mars, that doesn’t means that is reasonable to assume there is.

Perhaps the most brilliant mind of an age, Albert Einstein, did not approve of atheism and preferred a “humble agnosticism.”  He referenced God on multiple occasions.

I don’t even want to discuss this so I’ll just quote

“It’s irrelevant whether he may or may not maybe sorta kinda entertained the idea of a greater power or not.  Whatever his beliefs were, it never superseded his work as a physicist*. His concerns were that of the material world.” more…

Most atheists don’t know anything about religion.

I’m pretty sure many atheists are well versed in religion texts. But I can really only speak for myself: I was raised in a religious family, baptized, made my first comunion, studied in a religious school, I have read (some of) the blible and other religious books, I have gone to religious retreats, so even if I’m not a scholar I do have “some” knowledge about religion .

The idea of faith through reason is not something they can fathom, because they have not read anything other than science textbooks

Believe it or not, there are atheist that are NOT into science. I do love science but also love literature in general, poetry, philosophy, science fiction, I just enjoy a good book.

True  atheism…

Sorry, I stoped reading after true atheism,  if you don’t have the beliefs in gods that’s mostly it.

Science can’t comment on God though.  So no, there is no scientific basis for atheistic belief

If someone says that something  took actions into the world and affected it then there must be something that can be measured about those actions.

And atheism is not a belief.

you have faith too.  You have faith that there is nothing more.

Nope, nope, nope. I don’t “have faith that there is nothing more”

I have no reason to believe or even suspect there is something more after we die, so I don’t.

Well.

That’s all.
